REACH aims to break down barriers to immediate veterinary care by offering grants to any of the more than 100,000 AVMA members nationwide, increasing assistance to the most vulnerable communities. This program empowers AVMF to bring our “Helping Veterinarians Help Animals” motto to fruition on a much greater national and regional scale, potentially assisting thousands more animals in need every year.
Recently, a veterinarian and owner of Dr. Sue’s Animal Clinic shared a story of an amazing family that was enduring hard times. “They recently had to euthanize one of their older animals. Their other dog, Maggie, had been “off” since the loss of her best friend. At first, her family assumed she was just mourning. However, they started noticing increasing weight loss, decreased appetite, extreme lethargy, etc. When she failed to improve, they brought her in.”
Egore, a beautiful 22-year-old Amazon, got stuck in a sliding glass door, resulting in the loss of the top part of her beak. Her owner was on a fixed income and unable to afford immediate care. Thanks to generous gifts made by members of the community, Egore received the treatment she needed and now lives a charmed life.
When Cocoa, a chocolate lab, arrived at the emergency trauma clinic, he had just been rescued by firefighters from the smoke and flames that engulfed his home and took the lives of two pack mates. In the face of such devastating loss, the family couldn’t afford to pay for Cocoa’s treatment for smoke inhalation. Generous gifts supported the costs of the pup’s care. Cocoa, who has now become even more precious to the family, is on the road to recovery and doing well.
