Why reviewing scholarships is rewarding

Reviewing AVMF scholarship applications is one way for busy veterinarians to be involved and give back to the next generation of veterinarians. In this video, AVMF Board member Dr. Sandy Willis shares why she volunteers for the AVMF Scholarship Review Committee. Learn how you can apply today.

Call for veterinary scholarship reviewers

The AVMF has expanded our veterinary student scholarship program, and we are currently looking for additional volunteers to serve on the AVMF Scholarship Review Committee. Please see the eligibility criteria and reviewer responsibilities below. If you meet the criteria and are interested in mentoring students, we welcome you to apply. Thank you for your interest in volunteering to give back to the next generation of veterinarians.

Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Wirtz

For the past eight years, I have been privileged to review scholarship applications for the AVMF. This has allowed me, in a small way, to give back to the veterinary community, of which I’ve been a member for almost fifty years. It’s been a very rewarding, and often heartwarming experience, reading the stories of so many outstanding students. Many, through no fault of their own, are in severe financial need. It has been a pleasure to help many of these well qualified students. They want to make the world a better place, they are the future of the profession.”

— Dr. Arthur Wirtz

Eligibility

Reviewers must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Veterinarians or retired veterinarians
  • Recent veterinary graduates who have been out of veterinary school for five years or less
  • Someone who has another strong connection to the veterinary community
Reviewer responsibilities
  • As a member of this committee, you would be asked to read scholarship applications and assign a score to the application.
  • Essay questions are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. You do not need to do any mathematical computations – just assign a score to the questions.
  • Committee members are usually given 2 – 3 weeks to complete their confidential scoring of the applications.
  • The scholarship portal, where you will conduct your reviews, is simple to use. An assignment notification will be emailed to you once you have confirmed your availability.
  • All reviews are online and you can start and save your reviews until you can return and complete the rest, so it fits a busy schedule. If you have access to a computer and the internet you have everything you need to help.
  • A second round of reviews may be needed depending on of the number of applications received.
