AVMA/AVMF Scholarship for Veterans

Overview

In honor of the 100th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of the National Defense Act of 1916 and creating a Veterinary Corps within the U.S. Army, the AVMA and AVMF established a special scholarship for military veterans pursuing an education in veterinary medicine. Scholarships of $5,000 are available to veterans of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy currently in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of veterinary school at any AVMA accredited school.

University of Wisconsin

Paris Bassett

“I am very grateful for the gift of this scholarship, as it will enable me to afford travel expenses for several trips that will allow me to provide low or no service veterinary care in areas with few resources.”

University of Arizona

Krystal Eddis

“The support of this scholarship enables veterans, like me, to pursue a career in veterinary medicine after military service. I would not be where I am today without the generous contributions of those who support our veterans. Thank you for helping me to achieve this lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian.”

The Ohio State University

Richard McEnhill

“Over the course of my military career, my family has made many sacrifices including pursuing veterinary school. This scholarship will allow me to complete my veterinary education without asking my family to take on the additional financial burden that comes with graduate education. Thank you for supporting our military!”

Oregon State University

Krystyna Nowakowski

“I am extremely grateful for this scholarship. Transitioning from the Navy to veterinary school is not a common career path, and this award provides valuable financial assistance for non-traditional students like myself. I am excited to continue serving my greater community as a veterinarian.”

Michigan State University

Shane Raede

“This scholarship will take an enormous weight off my family and will allow us to place our youngest son into daycare during the school year. Incredibly grateful for this opportunity that the AVMF has provided.”
