In honor of the 100th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of the National Defense Act of 1916 and creating a Veterinary Corps within the U.S. Army, the AVMA and AVMF established a special scholarship for military veterans pursuing an education in veterinary medicine. Scholarships are available to veterans of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy currently in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of veterinary school at any AVMA accredited school.

“This scholarship provides significant relief, reducing the financial pressures of veterinary school and allowing me to stay engaged in community service and leadership while planning responsibly for the future. It supports my exploration of passions like mixed animal practice, pathology, and wildlife medicine, as well as opportunities for continued learning. I am deeply grateful to the AVMA/AVMF and their donors for supporting veterans in making meaningful, positive contributions to veterinary medicine and their communities.”

Texas A & M University
“I appreciate the AVMF and its donors for supporting veterans such as myself, so that we can continue our dedication of service to others through veterinary medicine. My wife and I welcomed our first child two weeks before finals and this scholarship greatly alleviates the financial stressors of veterinary school. It allows me to focus on the things that matter most, such as family and achieving the best veterinary education possible to benefit my future clients.”

“I made many sacrifices to fund my educational pursuits; the most difficult one being my military service. Although I cannot get back the time I missed with family and friends while away for training periods and deployment, this scholarship reaffirms those sacrifices did not go unnoticed.”
