Scholarship helps Varsha Ramachandra follow her passion for shelter medicine

For Varsha Ramachandra, a fourth-year veterinary student at the University of Georgia, shelter medicine is more than a career path. It’s a calling.

Varsha aspires to work in municipal shelter medicine, caring for animals who often have no one else to advocate for them. But pursuing specialized shelter training comes with significant financial barriers.

“Most shelters simply don’t have the resources to provide housing stipends or financial support for veterinary students during externships,” Varsha explains. “Without scholarship support, I probably wouldn’t have been able to afford the travel, housing, food, and other costs that come with these experiences.”

Thanks to donor-funded scholarship support, Varsha has been able to train alongside experienced shelter veterinarians at the organizations where she hopes to one day serve.

“This scholarship is allowing me to gain experiences within shelter medicine that I wouldn’t have been able to have otherwise,” she says. “It’s giving me the best possible chance to succeed in the field I care most about.”

For Varsha, the impact extends far beyond her own education.

“My hope is to help shelter animals that don’t have another advocate outside of me as their veterinarian,” she says. “Every animal that leaves a shelter healthy and alive has the opportunity to become someone’s beloved pet one day.”

She believes each rescued animal represents a ripple effect of compassion—reaching families, communities, and countless future adopters.

Varsha is deeply grateful to the donors who made her scholarship possible.

“The fact that someone wanted to support a student interested in shelter medicine and animal welfare is incredibly encouraging,” she says. “It means someone cares about the same cause that I care about.”

Because of donor generosity, future veterinarians like Varsha can pursue their passion, strengthen their skills, and help more animals find the healthy, loving futures they deserve.

Students like Varsha are the future of veterinary medicine, and scholarship support helps make their path possible.
