Surviving the odds: How one puppy got a second chance

Csaba (pronounced Chah-bah) was just a puppy when he arrived at MedVet in Meridian, ID, suffering from an intestinal blockage. Like many curious puppies, Csaba swallowed something he shouldn’t have. What followed became a powerful reminder of what compassion in the veterinary community can make possible.

At first, Csaba’s owner hoped a non-operative approach might work. For 24 hours, the veterinary care team monitored his condition, but the situation didn’t improve. Surgery was the only way to save him.

Board-certified specialist, Dr. Melody Ward, performed the complex procedure to remove the blockage and repair Csaba’s intestine. It worked. Just two days later, Csaba was stable, eating and able to go home with his relieved owner.

Unfortunately, the story didn’t end there.

The very next night, Csaba began vomiting again. His owner rushed him back to emergency care, where the team discovered something far more serious: septic peritonitis—a life-threatening infection in the abdomen that can sometimes develop after intestinal surgery. Without a second operation, Csaba would not survive.

The news was devastating for his owner. She had already used CareCredit to pay for Csaba’s first surgery and hospitalization. She couldn’t afford a second procedure.

Too often, moments like this leave loving pet owners with a heart-wrenching choice. But compassion and expertise stepped in when Dr. Ward’s team chose not to give up on Csaba. Instead of euthanasia, they continued care, knowing that the AVMF REACH Program™ was there to help make the lifesaving second surgery possible.

Csaba went back into surgery, and it saved his young life. Today, he has an excellent prognosis and the chance to grow up with the person who loves him.

Stories like Csaba’s happen every day in veterinary practices across the country. When unexpected medical emergencies happen during times of financial hardship, even the most dedicated professionals can’t do it alone. That’s where the AVMF REACH Program comes in.

Through REACH, the veterinary community and people who care about animals can help make sure pets like Csaba have a second chance. The program helps veterinarians do what they do best: save lives.

When you give to the REACH Program, you become part of stories like this. You help a playful puppy get a second chance instead of saying goodbye. You help a devoted owner keep the companion they love.

And you help veterinary practices say “yes” when it matters most.

This program is supported in part by PURINA through the ProPlan Veterinary Support Mission.
