“This support allows me to continue investigating contemporary SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in domestic cats, with the overarching goal of advancing our understanding of the virus in companion animals through a One Health lens. As an aspiring veterinary scientist, another summer of research will impact my career in meaningful ways. I look forward to using this time to grow as a researcher—whether I’m learning new techniques at the bench, refining my thought processes through strong mentorship, or finding creative and engaging ways to communicate my findings.”

“Receiving the 2nd Opportunity Research Scholarship from the AVMA/AVMF has been invaluable in supporting my professional development. This scholarship allows me to continue my Anaplasma vaccine project, which aims to address practical challenges in controlling this infection in cattle. Through this work, I am gaining hands-on research skills and mentorship that will guide my future career in veterinary medicine, combining clinical practice and evidence-based research.”

Connor Thonen-Fleck

“I am truly honored and grateful to receive the AVMA/AVMF 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Scholarship. This support allows me to continue my research training through a project investigating feline pharmacogenetic variability in antiplatelet therapy response, which will ultimately improve arterial thromboembolism treatment. I am excited not only about this impactful project, but also about the core research skills I will develop throughout the summer as I work toward my goal of becoming an emergency and critical care clinician-scientist.”
