Behind the gift: 21 years of passion, purpose, and lifelong love for animals

Sharon Carnes’ 21-year journey with AVMF highlights the profound impact one individual’s dedication can have on the veterinary community. Her story is a reminder that every gift, no matter the size, helps ensure that animals receive the care they deserve.

A deep connection with animals

Sharon currently shares her home in Kentucky with two rescue dogs: Bodi, a mini Schnoodle who was initially found on the streets, and Remi, a mini Terrier mix who was brought to Louisville Metro Animal Services with life-threatening injuries. Sharon fostered Remi after his surgery to close extensive wounds, and later adopted him after he fully recovered from surgery for a broken hip.

Over the years, Sharon has opened her heart and home to many animals through fostering and rescue. Each one has become a cherished member of her family, a reflection of the deep love and care she offers every animal she meets.

The inspiration behind giving

Sharon gives to AVMF because she believes in the importance of helping abused and neglected animals feel safe and loved. She is passionate about supporting veterinary professionals and their efforts to care for animals, knowing that their work is crucial in both the hardest and most hopeful moments. Sharon also hopes her support can contribute to the future of veterinary medicine, with the goal of one day saving all animals.

A surprising fact

Though her friends know her as someone who never watches sports, Sharon has an unexpected passion: She’s addicted to watching her 16-year-old cousin play volleyball!

Impact

Sharon’s story is a reminder that every gift, no matter the size, has the potential to make a lasting impact. Her 21 years of dedication to AVMF demonstrates the power of sustained support in advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine. Sharon’s contributions help ensure that the veterinary community has the resources needed—whether that’s to care for animals, provide scholarships for students, offer disaster relief during emergencies, or fund vital research.

Thank you, Sharon, for your unwavering support and for standing alongside the veterinary community to make a difference in the lives of animals and those who care for them.
