Inspiring veterinary innovation: 2025 VPRF/AVMF Veterinary Pharmacology Fellowship recipient announced

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and the Veterinary Pharmacology Research Foundation (VPRF) are proud to announce the recipient of the 2025 VPRF/AVMF Veterinary Pharmacology Fellowship, a program designed to enhance both the number and caliber of trained veterinary pharmacology researchers.

Each year, one graduate student (MS or PhD) pursuing a career in veterinary pharmacology is selected to receive up to $10,000 in support. The one-year fellowship may be used to fund training, stipends, professional travel, or other scholarly activities.

2025 fellowship recipient

Juliana Sullivan, a dual-degree DVM/PhD student at the University of California, Davis, has been awarded the fellowship. Sullivan is committed to a career that combines impactful clinical pharmacology research with mentoring future graduate students.

“When I entered veterinary school, I did not anticipate that research would become such a central and rewarding part of my career path,” Sullivan said. “However, experiences like receiving this fellowship have continually shown me how exciting and meaningful veterinary pharmacology research is, further solidifying my commitment to the field.”

Strengthening research and career development

Through the fellowship, Sullivan will be able to acquire pharmacokinetic analysis software essential to her research and attend an international conference to present her findings, connect with experts, and engage with the global scientific community.

“The AVMF/VPRF fellowship will strengthen my PhD training by giving me the resources and support I need to grow as a researcher,” she said. “Thank you to the VPRF, AVMF, and AAVPT for their invaluable support of my research and career development. I am also grateful to Dr. Knych and the Maddy Lab team for creating an environment in which I can pursue equine clinical pharmacology research that directly benefits veterinary patients.”

About the fellowship

The VPRF/AVMF Veterinary Pharmacology Fellowship reflects the shared mission of the AVMF and VPRF to advance veterinary research, strengthen clinical knowledge, and support the next generation of veterinary scientists. By investing in emerging leaders like Juliana Sullivan, the fellowship contributes to innovations in veterinary pharmacology that will improve patient care and broaden scientific understanding.
