Building a better world for animals and people

Over the past year, the word “transformation” has defined the work and direction of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). Guided by partnership, purpose, and progress, the Foundation reimagined its mission and vision to better serve animals, the people who care for them, and the communities they share.

At the heart of this transformation is a renewed clarity of purpose. The reimagined mission reflects a simple truth: When animals get the care they need, people are happier, and communities are healthier. By supporting people and programs that help care for animals, AVMF makes life better for all.

A vision for a better world

AVMF’s renewed vision looks forward with intention and optimism: To build a better world for animals and the people who care for them.

This vision recognizes that supporting veterinary professionals, expanding access to veterinary care, and investing in the future of the profession are essential to creating healthier communities.

Values that guide every action

The Foundation’s work is rooted in five core values, each shaping how AVMF delivers on its mission.

Compassion
• We honor the human-animal bond in every action we take.
• We are guided by science and compassion, which are the foundations of animal health.

Trust
• We act with integrity in every relationship, whether with veterinary teams, donors, pet owners, or animal-loving communities.
• We focus on the wellbeing of animals and those who care for them.

Urgency
• We respond swiftly when animals, communities, or veterinary teams are in crisis, because we recognize that need does not wait—and neither can we.
• We act passionately to deliver support, resources, and care when it matters most.

Impact
• We measure our success by the lives we improve.
• We fund programs and partnerships that create lasting outcomes.

Access
• Access to veterinary care is fundamental, and we work to remove financial and geographic barriers that prevent animals from receiving vet care.
• We strive to ensure that educational pathways and careers in veterinary medicine are accessible to all students.

A message from leadership: Transformation in action

Reflecting on the past year, AVMF Board of Directors Chair, Dr. Heather Case shares her perspective.

“Thanks to the generosity of donors and partners, AVMF was able to support current and future veterinary professionals, respond quickly in times of need, and strengthen the Foundation’s capacity for long-term impact.

The reimagined mission, vision, and values now guide every program, partnership, and investment, ensuring that AVMF’s work remains focused, relevant, and responsive.”

Looking ahead

As AVMF looks to rest of 2026 and beyond, it will continue to expand its reach, strengthen its voice, and elevate its role in supporting the veterinary profession.

Together, these changes are more than words on a page. They are the foundation for a stronger profession, healthier communities, and a better world.
