Improving our REACH: Focused funding, greater impact

At the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), we’ve made important updates to our REACH (Reaching Every Animal with Charitable Healthcare) Program—because we believe no pet should go without care because of financial constraints.

In 2025, we committed to awarding up to $1 million in REACH funds, thanks to the generous support of Purina® and our incredible donors. To make these resources more widely and consistently available, we’re now distributing up to $250,000 each quarter, allowing us to respond to urgent needs throughout the year.

We also refined our program guidelines to help ensure more veterinary teams and clients can benefit:

  • Individual AVMA members: Each member can receive up to $1,000 per calendar year for qualifying cases.
  • Multiple members in one practice: Veterinary practices with multiple members can receive up to $5,000 per calendar year per practice address.
  • Pooling option: Members within the same practice may pool their funds for a single client, not to exceed the $5,000 annual limit per practice.

These changes are already helping us reach more animals, support more families, and empower more veterinarians to say “yes”—even when a client’s financial situation says “no.”

Rayne’s story: When $250 meant the world

Rayne, a 15-week-old Miniature Pinscher, was brought to the Oregon Humane Society after injuring her front leg during play. She had suffered a painful and irreparable displaced fracture that required amputation.

Her owner, who was between jobs and receiving SNAP assistance, couldn’t afford the full cost of surgery. While she was denied a credit card loan, she qualified for an in-house discount—but there was still a gap.

With a $250 REACH grant, Dr. Stephen Kochis and his team were able to move forward with Rayne’s care. Her owner is now paying the remaining balance in manageable installments—and Rayne is recovering beautifully.

This case is a powerful reminder that even modest grants can make an extraordinary impact. REACH not only changed Rayne’s life, it gave her family hope and gave her veterinary team the support they needed to provide compassionate care.

Why these changes matter

We made these updates to our REACH program with stories like Rayne’s in mind. By creating a more sustainable funding structure and expanding access, we’re ensuring that more animals get the care they need, more families feel supported, and more veterinary teams can say “yes.”

Every grant—big or small—makes a difference. And together, we’re reaching further than ever before.
