2005 AVMF Relief Grant Recipient
From David Moores, DVM, Tchefuncte Animal Hospital, Madisonville, LA
Hurricane Katrina hit my family and my practice pretty hard. I live near Covington, Louisiana, and residents here were without water or electricity for three weeks due to the heavy rain and extensive wind damage. Our house was destroyed by a falling tree and business slowed down in the aftermath of the storm. On top of all that my wife was six months' pregnant with our first child, so we were struggling to make ends meet. That's when I remembered hearing about AVMF's Disaster Relief Grant Program. I applied for and received a grant that proved to be a lifesaver as we rebuilt our home and got the clinic back up and running. Seven years later, I continue to be grateful for AVMF's generosity during that difficult time. Now I've decided to keep that gift moving forward; I'm donating back the amount that was awarded to me so that I may help another veterinarian challenged by a disaster. Thank you, AVMF! --Dr. David Moores
2012 AVMF Student Scholarship Recipient
From Lu Dao
I would like to thank you and the AVMF for the scholarship I received. It was a great honor to receive the award. The little girl in the hospital who smiled when we brought her a Josh Project stuffed puppy and the disadvantaged jud who believed that he could also be a veterinarian when I told him that I was raised in a neighborhood worse than his are all rewards in itself. But to be recognized by people in our profession for the work I've been doing is also extra rewarding. As an encouraging updatem I've recently been approved by the Sacramento Juvenile Hall as a volunteer for the chaplain that will help counsel kids. I will encourage them by saying that no matter where they come from, they can obtain their dreams just like me! So the joys and rewards of practicing veterinary medicine will be heard by an unlikely audience. Hopefully it will inspire them. Thank you again for the scholarship. -- Lu Dao
